Helical Piles

Cyntech’s helical piling systems for deep foundations have been successfully utilized for a wide range of applications. Compared to other types of foundations, helical piles offer attractive benefits by conserving labour, materials, equipment, and installation time. A typical helical pile can be installed in minutes with common construction equipment. After installation, the load can be applied immediately – no additional work is required.

Predictable holding capacity is achieved by monitoring installation torque of the pile during construction. Monitoring installation torque is similar to monitoring blow counts of driven piles for predicting pile
capacity.

Benefits of Helical Piles

  • Significant cost savings over traditional foundation methods
  • Reduced construction time
  • No excavation or spoil removal
  • Installation unaffected by weather
  • Holding capacity verified during installation
  • No harmful vibrations during installation
  • Ideal for areas of limited access or restricted workspace
  • Construction unaffected by high water table
  • Removable and reusable
  • Installs with common construction equipment
  • Interfaces with structural steel members
  • Interfaces with concrete slabs or sleepers
  • Lightweight, easy to handle and transport
  • Minimum lay down area required
  • Small, mobile installation equipment

Helical piles are ideal in areas of limited access, such as areas with low overhead or width restrictions. Installation is unaffected by weather or high water table. No vibration during installation means no damage to sensitive structures or instrumentation in the construction zone.

Typical applications for Cyntech's helical pile system include foundations for:

  • Pipe racks
  • Pipe bridges
  • Valves and scraper traps
  • Skid mounted buildings and equipment
  • Building and equipment floor slabs
  • Street light foundations
  • Tower foundations
  • Manifolds
  • To replace any deep foundation where wood, concrete, steel or auger cast piles are being considered.

Advertising Sign Foundation

An advertising sign company was constructing a large (48’ x 20’) sign in the Boston area. The sign was to be mounted 76’ above ground on a single pipe column. This resulted in an extremely large overturning force. Traditional piles were not feasible as soil conditions at the site were extremely weak.

Concrete spread footing was proposed , but due to the soil conditions and proximity, the excavation required large back sloping and would have been expensive.

Pipe Rack Anchors

Husky Energy’s SAGD Celtic Project, near Lloydminster SK, required two aboveground
pipelines to be constructed. The pipelines traversed a wetland area, with very weak
organic surficial soils, underlain by very firm clay. The engineering consultants were concerned that the combination of soil types, lateral loads on the foundations, and access would make traditional pile driving relatively expensive for this section of the pipeline. Cyntech’s foundation anchors were used to overcome these difficulties, and reduce costs.

Building Foundation Upgrade

As part of a plant optimization project, Husky Energy needed to replace three existing pumps with a single, high capacity pump. The pumps were located inside a self-framing, skid mounted steel building. To drive additional piles for the new pump foundation, the building would have to be moved. Disconnecting all piping, electrical and instrumentation would have been time consuming and very costly, and necessitated a plant outage. Cyntech Corporation was able to upgrade the foundations inside the existing building, quickly and at a lower cost.
